Keyon Harris: I was always a shy child and I would always write down my thoughts and feelings. First it started out as poems, by the age of 11 I had turned them into song lyrics. I’ve always loved music I never envisioned myself doing this. I used to have a huge book with songs in it and my cousin Derek seen it one day and said man these are really good have you thought about doing something with them. I was like oh wow thanks, I really hadn’t planned on doing anything with them. He says well I believe you should. An so one day I said well I’m going to try and get my voice to do what the words on these pages can. I made this song called High Maintenance an it was an instant favorite. I played it for my Uncle Daniel and he really liked the song. He said wow nephew you have some real talent. Your songwriting is really good and your voice isn’t that bad either. An that was all the confirmation I needed to continue on my musical journey. Hearing that people believed in me and my abilities.

Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?

Keyon Harris: I like Taylor Swift, but there are several other artists I model my music after. Gary Clark Jr is my new favorite. An then you have like the older guys Muddy Waters, Little Walter, just to name a few. Also huge shoutout to Darius Rucker for being a trendsetter in Country music for the Black community. That’s very inspiring.

What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?

Keyon Harris: I’ve done almost everything. I’ve won awards, been on a bunch of radio stations, been on a ton of playlists, been in several magazines, done several interviews. Touring, winning some Grammys, and getting some of my songs in TV are the only things left for me to accomplish. My message is simply this. Do not and I repeat do not let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. Always believe in yourself, because if you don’t no one else will. Find something that you love doing so that way you will never truly work a day in your life.

What’s the latest release of yours? Tell us about it.

Keyon Harris: My latest release was called “Brick by Brick”, and it came out March 4th. It is a little freestyle about how I am trying to build my brand, and mine an my family’s legacy. One day at a time. Slowly but surely. Laying a good foundation, and building it brick by brick.
