Interview with Alternative Artist Jay Pruitt on New Single 'Unalived' Artist Interviews

Interview with Alternative Artist Jay Pruitt

MuzicNotez: First off, it’s an honor to be doing this interview with you, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us. What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?

Jay Pruitt: Hey, so glad to be here! Well, you know, like many of us, 2020 was a wild ride for me. I found myself stuck at home during the lockdowns, just trying to make sense of it all. That’s when I turned to music. I was 22 at the time, and I figured, why not give it a shot? It became a kind of therapy for me, a way to channel all the emotions swirling around. And I haven’t looked back since.

Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?

Jay Pruitt: Ah, where do I start? Well, let me tell you, Lana Del Rey holds a special place in my heart. Her music spoke to me in a way that no other artist ever has. There’s just something about her voice, her lyrics, her whole vibe that resonates with me on a deep level. She’s like a guiding light in the darkness, you know? And she’s taught me that it’s okay to embrace your flaws, to be unapologetically yourself. So yeah, Lana Del Rey changed my life. She is, and will always be, my favorite artist.

What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?

Jay Pruitt: Oh, man, I just want my music to feel like a cozy blanket on a rainy day—something you can wrap yourself in and feel safe. If I can touch even one person’s heart with my songs, then I’ll consider that a win. My message is simple: no matter what you’re going through, you’re not alone. We’re all in this crazy journey together.

What’s the greatest concert you’ve ever been to or performed?

Jay Pruitt: Oh, hands down, the greatest concert experience for me was when I saw Lana Del Rey live in Huntsville, Alabama. Let me tell you, it was an unforgettable day. I was so determined to be front and center that I ended up sleeping on the sidewalk just to secure a spot at the barricade. And let me tell you, it was worth every minute. The moment Lana stepped on stage, it felt like magic. I sang along to every song, shed a few tears of pure joy, and captured the whole experience on camera. Those videos ended up going viral on Instagram and TikTok, which was pretty surreal. But the best part? Near the end of the show, during her performance of “Ultraviolence,” Lana actually came down to the audience. I was just standing there, completely awestruck, when she grabbed my phone and took a selfie with me. It was a moment I’ll cherish forever.

Your latest release is the track ‘Unalived’. Your sound really developed in this new song. How did that happen? How would you describe the track?

Jay Pruitt: I poured my heart and soul into that track, drawing inspiration from the rollercoaster of emotions that we all experience in life. It’s a song that reflects the highs and lows, the twists and turns, and the messy, beautiful journey we’re all on. Life isn’t always easy, and “Unalived” isn’t afraid to explore the tough stuff—the moments of doubt, the struggles, the times when we feel like we’re barely hanging on. But through it all, there’s a sense of hope, a reminder that we’re not alone in our struggles. I wanted to create something that felt relatable, something that listeners could connect with on a deep level. Because let’s face it, we’ve all been there—feeling lost, feeling broken, feeling like we’re just trying to figure it all out. And if my music can offer even a glimmer of comfort, a sense of understanding, then I’ve done my job.

What is your process like when creating music?

Jay Pruitt: My process? Well, it’s kind of like baking a pie from scratch. You start with a handful of ingredients—maybe a melody, a lyric, a feeling—and you mix them all together until something beautiful emerges. It’s messy, it’s chaotic, but man, is it rewarding. And hey, if you ever need a recipe for a killer apple pie, I’ve got you covered!

What sets you apart from other artists?

Jay Pruitt: Hmm, good question! You know, I think what sets me apart is my genuine willingness to bare my soul in my music. I’ve always believed that the best art comes from a place of authenticity, and for me, that means being unapologetically real. I’m not afraid to show the messy, imperfect parts of myself—the moments of vulnerability, the struggles, the raw emotions. We all have our rough patches, our moments of doubt and uncertainty. And I think there’s something incredibly relatable about that honesty, about being able to say, “Hey, I’m not perfect, but I’m trying my best.” So yeah, I guess you could say my music is like a window into my soul, a reflection of my own journey through life’s ups and downs.

What else are you working on? What can we expect to see and hear from you in the future?

Jay Pruitt: Ah, the million-dollar question! Well, I’ve got a few projects up my sleeve, but you’ll just have to wait and see. Let’s just say there are plenty more stories coming your way, so stay tuned!

Anything else you wish to say about yourself or your music? Any message for your fans?

Jay Pruitt: I just want to take a moment to send out a big, heartfelt thank you to all my incredible fans out there. Seriously, you guys are the absolute best, and I am beyond grateful for each and every one of you. Your support means the world to me, and I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without you by my side. Whether you’ve been rocking out to my tunes since day one or you just stumbled upon my music recently, please know that your support doesn’t go unnoticed. Every stream, every like, every comment—it all means the world to me. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing in me, for sticking with me on this crazy journey, and for being the absolute best fans a musician could ask for. You guys rock!
