Interview with Pop Artist Aubrie Mitchell Artist Interviews

Interview with Pop Artist Aubrie Mitchell on debut single ‘Secret’ & more

MuzicNotez: First off, it’s an honor to be doing this interview with you, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us. What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?

Aubrie Mitchell: I grew up in a very musical household where both of my parents played instruments and had my siblings and I learn piano from a young age. I enjoyed listening to all types of music and was always curious about how songs were made, so during high school I began to experiment with songwriting and music production. I remember thinking “how hard could it be?” and realized early on that it was indeed quite hard creating what I could hear in my head into reality.

This disconnect sparked my passion to make music as it’s motivated me to continue learning and being curious about how I can improve my songwriting/production until I can feel the gap between my vision and what I’ve made become smaller and smaller. I guess making music is a very satisfying feeling for me and I can’t imagine not doing what I do now.

Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?

Aubrie Mitchell: I loved listening to my parents’ old CD mixtape that they would chuck on when cleaning. It had Atomic Kittens, Spandau Ballet, Coldplay, Goldenhorse, and Enya to name a few. But I’ve always loved the classics like Michael Jackson, ABBA, Queen, a-ha, Earth Wind and Fire, Bee Gees, and so many more. However, I’d say the music I create today is more influenced by what music I connected with the most as a teen, which was artists such as Lorde, Billie Ellish, Sigrid, and Kimbra.

What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?

Aubrie Mitchell: My goal as a songwriter and producer is to get to a place where I’m happy with the music I create. I’m my own worst critic so my own approval is what I’m always chasing. As a musician, I’d like to just make music that others can relate to and/or appreciate and if any other success comes along the way that’s great!

What’s the greatest concert you’ve ever been to or performed?

Aubrie Mitchell: I’ve honestly only been to a handful of concerts, but I’d say Jacob Collier was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen.

Your debut single is ‘Secret’, and we love it! What does this song mean to you? How would you describe it?

Aubrie Mitchell: I wrote this song in a flurry of emotions at 2am one morning. I was feeling down and needed a pick me up, so what you hear is essentially a glorified journal entry about letting go of what I can’t control and not being afraid to fail.

Just because this is your personal debut, doesn’t mean your new to music. I see that you’re also a producer, songwriter and audio engineer. What’s your musical background?

Aubrie Mitchell: Yes! I’ve been songwriting and producing for about 10 years and only recently over the last 2 years have I been producing and engineering more professionally. I studied at the University of Auckland NZ doing a Bachelor of Music, majoring in classical theory, and after that degree, I got an internship at BIG FAN studios in Tāmaki Makaurau NZ. From there, I was able to network with so many creatives in the industry and develop my production/songwriting skills. I eventually signed to Page 1 Management and Dryden Music Publishing and have been able to travel the world making music with all sorts of people in really cool places. I’ve been working on my craft for a while, so it’s an interesting feeling putting out music of my own finally, but it feels like the right time and I’m excited to share more!

You’ve been finding a lot of success early on in your music career here. In an ever changing music industry, what would you say are the most important tips to succeed for independent artists?

Aubrie Mitchell: I’d say for anyone starting out, to take the small wins and celebrate as you go because it can be easy to get down about not being amazing instantly.

What else are you working on? What can we expect to see and hear from you in the future?

Aubrie Mitchell: I’ve got my next single coming out soon that I’m excited to release! And in no doubt have I got so many demos stored on my hard drives just waiting to be out there, so expect lots more from me:)

Anything else you wish to say about yourself or your music? Any message for your fans?

Aubrie Mitchell: Thanks for having me!
