Today we’re talking about the classical folk song ‘Da Sealkie Wife’s Sang’ by Adrian Brockless, Mary-Ellen Odie and Orchestra Nova. Out of Shetland, Scotland, Adrian Brockless is a classical composer. ‘Da Sealkie Wife’s Sang’ is a traditional folk song, originally written by Mary-Ellen Odie. Then, this new rendition is performed by Orchestra Nova, a quartet out of Aberdeen.
The inspiration behind this arrangement of the timeless folk tune ‘Da Sealkie Wife’s Sang’, was Brockless mother’s birthday. It has since grown from there in to what it is now, for a much wider audience to be able to enjoy. The family connection continues, as Adiran’s father, Brian Brockless, was a talented British classical musician himself. On top of that, his aunt Pauline was a talented soprano singer. This musical lineage, combined with his time as chorister at St. Paul’s Cathedral and others, have laid the groundwork for the classical composer he is today.
Eventually, Brockless moved to Shetland, where this song is connected to. ‘Da Sealkie Wife’s Sang’ by Adrian Brockless and Orchestra Nova is a new take on the old Scottish folklore track. The track is about mystical seals, that turn in to humans. The women they turned in to would shed their seal skins and dance on the shore. A man took one of the maidens skin and hid it away, so she couldn’t return with the others to the sea. He married her and she stayed with him until she found it again and returned to the sea. They bring this cinematic narrative to life in the emotionally rich track. This is a hauntingly beautiful piece, that stays true to its folk roots, but also the orchestration really captures the song and brings it to life.
