Interview with R&B Artist Lola on her Debut Single 'Energy' Artist Interviews

Interview with R&B Artist Lola on her Debut Single ‘Energy’

MuzicNotez: First off, it’s an honor to be doing this interview with you, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us. What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?

Lola: I am honored to be here. Thank you for having me! I started creating music at an early age. I was knee-high when I started singing. My deep connection to music inspired me to become an artist. Like all art, music is a beautiful form of expression. I express myself better through writing. Music has always been therapeutic for me. I knew at an early age that this was my passion.

Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?

Lola: I was inspired by Tina Turner, Selena Quintanilla-Perez, and Janet Jackson when I was growing up. Michael Jackson and Beyonce are honorable mentions. They all contributed to my music journey. When I was young, I loved to perform in front of guests. When my family had company, I would perform Tina, Selena, and Janet’s songs. I had a small disco ball that I would use as my stage lights, haha. I always turned the living room into a full-length concert. I never missed an opportunity to perform, and I was serious about it. I saw powerful women when I watched Janet, Tina, and Selena. I studied them, and I still do. I knew I wanted to be like that. I have applied a lot of their techniques to my artistry.

What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?

Lola: I want to touch people with my music. Everything that I write comes from experience. I take a lyrical approach to my art. My music has messages and comes from a vulnerable place. The biggest reward is creating timeless music and art that people can feel and relate to. That’s my goal. Another goal is to become a songwriter for other artists. I have songs written that I would love to push to other musicians. I want to go as far as I can in music. I genuinely love the craft.

What’s the greatest concert you’ve ever been to or performed?

Lola: It would be between Usher’s OMG Tour and Beyonce’s Formation Tour. They are both incredible performers. I’ll say Beyonce’s Formation Tour. That was not my first time seeing Bey. She stole my heart all over again at the concert. It was an unforgettable experience. I saw Tinashe for my birthday a few years ago. I went to her Joyride tour. It was one of the best concerts I have been to. Her concert is at the top of my list.

You just released your debut single ‘Energy’, how does it feel to finally release your debut?

Lola: OMG, Amazing! Releasing my debut single is a milestone for many reasons. It’s a significant step towards my music career. Although music has always been my passion, it has been a long journey towards releasing music. I have a substantial catalog of songs written, but this is my first professional release. I am so excited about what’s to come. Right now, I am just basking in the moment.

How would you describe the single ‘Energy’?

Lola: ‘Energy’ captures the essence of self-love. It’s an R&B song centered around taking your power back after a toxic relationship. It’s about calling back your energy from the relationship and pouring it back into yourself. There is a lot of self-realization in the song.

Did you write this track yourself? What inspired it?

Lola: Yes, I wrote ‘Energy’ myself. I wanted to write a track that focused on self-worth. I am sure most of us have stayed in a relationship longer than we should have. I wrote ‘Energy’ as a reminder to always choose yourself first. Know when it is time to walk away from something.

What else are you working on? What can we expect to see and hear from you in the future?

Lola: I am working on new music. I also plan to collaborate with other artists. I want to release a mixtape soon. The project will better display my sound and style as an artist. I am also releasing a music video for ‘Energy’ this year. So, stay tuned!
