Mat Kearney Returns with ‘Good Old Days’ Headlinez

Mat Kearney Rediscovers the Good Old Days With a Heartfelt, Independent Spirit

Mat Kearney returns with ‘Good Old Days,’ a nostalgic, soul-soaked single that blends his trademark storytelling with the freedom of an artist fully in control of his craft. Long known for weaving folk-pop warmth with subtle hip-hop cadence, Kearney has spent the past few years redefining his artistry on his own terms. Releasing through his own imprint, Middle Kid Records, he’s embraced independence not as a fallback, but as a creative rebirth. ‘Good Old Days’ is the latest proof of that evolution.

We especially love the Mat Kearney story here at MuzicNotez, because we continually push independent music and he’s just another great example of an artist leaving the major labels, to go independent and take artistic freedom back. This was clearly the right decision, as he’s absolutely thriving, professionally and creatively.

Who is Mat Kearney?

Well for those that don’t already know, he broke out in the early 2000’s, and has built up a very strong music career for himself. His unique blend of music has notes of folk, pop and even hip hop, but his sound is iconically his own. Kearney made his major label debut in 2006 with the hit ‘Nothing Left To Lose’. He found big success being featured on shows like Grey’s Anatomy and released a number of chart topping tracks.

In 2018, he took control of his music career and went independent, releasing CRAZYTALK to massive success. Millions of streams later, he has his own indie label now called Middle Kid Records.

A Song That Feels Like a Memory

‘Good Old Days’ captures the fleeting beauty of life’s small, unforgettable moments: late-night drives, snapshots of youth, faces that stay with you even after the years move on. Kearney sings with the gentle ache of someone who has lived enough to appreciate the past, but not enough to let it go.

The production is crisp, warm, and intentionally understated, letting his voice carry the emotional weight. Subtle acoustic textures and soft rhythmic pulses give the song a cinematic quality, yet it never feels overly polished. Instead, it breathes, honest, real, and perfectly aligned with Kearney’s indie direction. Musically, the song is really beautiful and has a lot of depth. I love the subtle touches of the saxophone, smooth and groovy.

Independence Suits Mat Kearney

One of the most compelling aspects of ‘Good Old Days’ is what exists beneath the music: an artist who stepped away from major-label expectations to reclaim his sound. Kearney’s move into independence mirrors a wider movement in modern music, one where authenticity and ownership are at the forefront. With the rise of AI in the music industry, we need more unique and creative artists like this, not more cookie cutter props churned out of the major label oven.

This is the kind of creative freedom that MuzicNotez champions (for nearly two decades now), and it’s inspiring to see an established name thrive outside the traditional industry machine.

A Standout Release From a Seasoned Storyteller

‘Good Old Days’ may only run a couple minutes, but it leaves a lasting echo. It’s reflective without being heavy, nostalgic without being cliché, and it lands with the quiet confidence of an artist who knows exactly who he is.

For fans of heartfelt indie pop, singer-songwriter authenticity, and music with genuine emotional depth, Mat Kearney’s ‘Good Old Days’ is a must-listen.
