Irish rock band The Screaming Eagles are back with a vengeance with their thunderous second album, Stand Up And Be Counted. This fast-paced, visceral performance is a must-listen for those in whom the spirit of true rock and roll still burns.
From the undeniably upbeat and catchy melodies in the title track “Stand Up And Be Counted” and “Breakin’ All The Rules” to the downright vicious riffs in the darker, heavier songs including “Save Me” and “Streets Of Gold,” guitarist Adrian McAleenan asserts his dominance of distortion and delicious licks. Soaring high above the instrumentation is the commanding, dynamic voice of Chris Fry, which somehow trades off between bright, clear runs and high notes, and a snarly rasp when emphasis is needed. Far from being one-dimensional, the tasty wah pedal-infused riffs in “Chase You Down” and the broody, almost restrained verses in “Get Out While I’m Ahead” add depth and color to the album’s overall sound. Tight, refined, yet aggressive, this is the sound of a group of musicians that have put in the work to meticulously hone their craft, but are still plenty hungry to make an impact in their scene.
The music video for “Breakin’ All The Rules” perfectly captures the energy and attitude of the album as a whole. A secret rendezvous, a tense poker game ending in an all-out brawl, interspersed with excellent shots of the band performing, the video both entertains and showcases the band’s persona well.
The Screaming Eagles are currently bringing their raw brand of rock and roll to Germany, and rock lovers of the UK better prepare to stand up and be counted among the fans of this formidable band.
