Artist Interviews
Interview with Kuzco on her new electro pop single ‘Be Loved’, how to succeed in music, what’s next & More
MuzicNotez: First off, it’s an honor to be doing this interview with you, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us.
What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?
- Kuzco: I began playing piano at age 7. I absolutely hated it. My parents were so encouraging though. I think they could really see deep down how important music was to me. I’m so glad I stuck with it! Little me would never have imagined doing it full time. Around my late teens is when I started properly making music. I was a very shy creative & collaborator at first. Through the help of trusted music mentors and friends, I really started to develop my own voice and come to understand that it’s seriously all just fun. As soon as I started being more playful with it, that’s when I started producing my own music.
Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?
- Kuzco: Subconsciously, probably famous people. But in reality, it’s much more personal than that. My parents, both Mum and Dad, live and breathe music. From 80s disco b-sides to yacht rock, motown to jazz. I’ve been listening to music since the womb and developing my tastes since day dot. My musical surroundings have always been my main source of inspiration. There’s also no better resource than hitting up a friend and asking what they have on rotation.
What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?
- Kuzco: Love and spirit. The older I get, the more I feel called to use my music as a platform to share love. I think the more aligned I feel with myself, the more good energy seems to flow my way.
What’s the greatest concert you’ve ever been to or performed?
- Kuzco: Caroline Polacheck, Charlotte Adigery & Bolis Pupil, Beyonce.
Your latest release is the single ‘Be Loved’, which we love! What inspired this track? What does it mean to you?
- Kuzco: I’ve been really digging into the history of 90s house. Specifically that of Detroit. I mean the greats are from there – Theo Parrish, Marcellus Pitman, Maurice Fulton. DJs / Producers I’ve been watching at clubs and festivals for years. The sound is so familiar to me and I really wanted to use that as a catalyst for ‘Be Loved’. The piano hook came to me one day in a really dark winter and I just played it for hours and hours. It felt really special to me. The longer I played it, the deeper it felt and so I slowly started developing the drums and bass around that. I love where it finally got to.
You have a unique sound, how would you describe it?
- Kuzco: I find it hard to define my sound because I’m always being pushed and pulled in so many ways. I think the through line are my sort of wispy vocals. I think I just like making music for the MuzicNotez 3/5/2026 underground dance scene because that’s where I’ve spent a lot of nights dancing across the world.
In a quickly evolving music industry, what do you think it takes to succeed today?
- Kuzco: I think having an adaptable approach to your work, being savvy and diversifying. Using social media as a tool and not feeling controlled by it. Investing time into the right people and places. Relying on your community and being a good hearted person.
What else are you working on? What can we expect to see and hear from you in the future? Tell us about the new album you have coming up in April.
- Kuzco: Very excited to be announcing my next EP, ‘Bound to Be’. Set for release May 28th. My first ever pressing too!
