Garry ‘Magpie’ Bowler Set to Release ‘The In Crowd’ on April 6th
UK drummer and songwriter Garry ‘Magpie’ Bowler is gearing up to release his reimagined version of The In Crowd on April 6th — and this one carries far more weight than a typical cover.
Originally penned by Billy Page and popularized in the 1960s, Bowler’s take reshapes the song into a rallying cry for original music and the artists who create it. Rather than leaning on nostalgia, the upcoming single is positioned as a bold statement about protecting creativity in an era dominated by remakes and recycled formulas.
A Tribute Rooted in Rock History
The release also serves as a heartfelt nod to Lemmy Kilmister, marking ten years since the Motörhead icon’s passing. Bowler’s own connection to that camp runs deep, and the lineup assembled for The In Crowd reinforces that legacy.
On bass is Alan Davey (ex-Hawkwind), while the late Wayne Kramer of MC5 contributes guitar — notably one of his final recordings. Rounding out the track is Enid Williams of Girlschool, adding an authentic vocal presence tied directly to Motörhead’s extended family tree.
Built from the Beat Up
Unusually, the track was constructed starting with a solo drum recording, allowing each collaborator to layer their identity onto the rhythm foundation. It’s a fitting approach for a drummer-led project — and one that suggests a grounded, driving core.
Set for release April 6th, The In Crowd promises to be more than a reinterpretation. It’s shaping up as a tribute, a statement, and a timely reminder that without original artists, there is no legacy to preserve.
