Artist Interviews
Interview with Sofia Gillani on Pop Single ‘Read Your Mind’ & More
MuzicNotez: First off, it’s an honor to be doing this interview with you, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us. What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?
Sofia Gillani: I took up musical theatre at school and she 9 and performed at quite a few productions. I caught the bug of singing and performing from there on. Once I got a chance to record my own original song I never looked back. More shows came up and I having been honing my craft on the stage for the last few years. I would love to do more musical theatre in the future.
Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?
Sofia Gillani: I would say early on inspiration to sing came from listening to Queen, Adele, Jhené Aiko, Michael Jackson, SOS band, Owl City and Charlie Puth. Over time my taste in music has become more eclectic from The Smiths, ariana grande, SZA, and the band IDKHTFM.
What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?
Sofia Gillani: Through my songs, I aim to share my personal experiences and create a sense of relatability with my listeners. One thing that sets me apart is my uniqueness. None of my songs are the same, and each song explores a new genre. My style is bold, young, and loud, and not limited to any specific type. I express myself through music, so my songs are messages and meanings that have come from my life, and I want people, no matter what stage of life, to be able to use my music as a safe space, first and foremost.
What’s the greatest concert you’ve ever been to or performed?
Sofia Gillani: : So far it would have to be Olivia Roderigo in London.
Your latest release is the single ‘Read Your Mind’, what inspired this track? How would you describe it?
Sofia Gillani: : I believe platonic love is so incredibly strong, so this song was mainly about me building relationships that are so dear to me and navigating different people – even with the trials and tribulations that come with it. I feel like platonic love is not talked enough about, and this fun garage beat makes this song so relatable as the highs and lows of close friendship experiences is one that makes us very emotionally vulnerable.
When writing new music, what is your writing style like?
Sofia Gillani: : The world is my inspiration, and the relationships within it. My music is representative of my messages and emotions that I feel daily. So when I get even a hint of inspiration, I’ll jot down random words or ideas about what I’m feeling, and then later put it into a song. It’s very freeing, and makes music so enjoyable for me. Over the years, I’ve definitely improved in how I illustrate those messages, and refined my skill.
Your also create great music videos, what is your process like for creating your videos?
Sofia Gillani: : The typical process for creating a music video is working on a Mood Board, Storyboard, and Script. It’s a fun process and I look forward to experimenting with ideas a lot more.
What else are you working on? What can we expect to see and hear from you in the future?
Sofia Gillani: : I’m performing at quite a few festivals this summer and more music is soon to be released in the coming months. In this industry anything can happen at any time so keep your eye on my socials!
