Classical guitarist releases 1st Christmas LP
Released in conjunction with Classic FM, ‘Christmas Time‘ is the first festive album by classical guitarist Craig Ogden. Comprising 16 tracks of Christmas cover tunes such as ‘Away In A Manger’ and ‘Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire’ – songs that range from classical carols to more ‘pop’ in genre.
What doesn’t waver is the quality. Most of the album is played on solo acoustic guitar, with chords, melody and intricate finger picking weaving in and out of one another with great dexterity. With a handful of songs strings are added to mix things up a bit, and in the solo guitar numbers each verse is often played in a different style in order to make sure they don’t blend in to one another.
It makes for an intriguing album, with top quality performances from Ogden and excellent production thanks to Classic FM and Universal. There’s great cross-over appeal here – familiar songs in a new style – that may win over non-classical fans. If you’re looking for a Christmas album of hits you can sing along to, this isn’t it. But if you’re interested in a great talent giving his new take on songs you know, give it a spin.
