From the opening chords of ‘Lady Jane’, a mid-tempo band song with a pounding groove to keep it rolling, you know two things about Billie Myers’ album. First, you’re in the capable hands of an accomplished songwriter. Second, this is music that’s come a long way from the pop tropes of 1998’s mega hit ‘Kiss The Rain’.
Following that release and her successful debut album, Myers’ second LP was a critical success but not so much on the commercial side. Soon after, she parted ways with Universal into the musical wilderness. And on this evidence, her return is something to celebrate.
This album is the work of a more mature artist, far closer to singer-songwriter territory than previous work. The aforementioned opener is just one of many highlights, full of clever instrumentation to keep the sections clearly differentiated – from the full band sound to a quiet of one or two instrumentation. Other strong songs include ‘I Hope You’re Happy Now’ and lead single ‘Wonderful’ which perhaps bear the closest relation to Myers’ pop output but still represent a step forward.
Darker, more soulful tracks such as ‘You Wear Heaven’ and ‘Anonymous’ prove the real quality of the album though, marking out a middle section that is outstanding, in the literal sense. This a great return from the British/American songstress, an album worth checking out.
