Interview with Dub Techno Producer COLB on New Single ‘Dubonite’, Influences & More

MuzicNotez: First off, it’s an honor to be doing this interview with you, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us.

What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?

  • COLB: I think my main motivation was my passion for music and sound in general. I’ve been listening a lot of different genres throughout time and still listen to a variety of music to this day but synthesizers and electronic music is what I’ve been drawn to and ultimately led me to experiment and create my own music.
My first attempts were a very long time ago with a basic computer software but it wasn’t until 2015 when I started my first project – Agent 34.95, released a few tracks in my spare time and I still keep it going. Three years ago I started another project – Alta Viridi with a different musical approach, using vocals with an overall trip-hop vibe. Finally this year came out COLB which is my main focus and the direction I wanna pursue in the future.

Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?

  • COLB: I could get inspired by everything I listen at the moment and also the surrounding environment has a role to play. There are many artists that influenced me in shaping my sound but if is to point out a few names I would have to say Pink Floyd, Jean-Michel Jarre and Vangelis, like the early ones, followed by Future Sound Of London, Orbital, Leftfield, Underworld and moving forward with Carbon Based Lifeforms, Basic Channel and Deepchord.

What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?

  • COLB: I would like to become a better producer with each track I release and build a discography that is relevant for the listener, one which stands the test of time. I do this out of passion and I don’t expect anything in particular, I’m just happy that I’m able to do it and I get immense satisfaction after the creative process is finished and I look at the result, so this is something I could say as a message – “Find a way to do what you love and don’t expect anything”.

What’s the latest release of yours? Tell us about it.

  • COLB: My latest release is Dubonite, a punchy techno dub infused production balanced with an atmospheric touch. The title is a made up word I did in relation with dynamite to suggest dub elements into a high energy context. The rest is pretty much in the lines of what COLB is about – deep electronic music with dub influences and experimental sounds. I filmed the video during my travels, like the other ones, this is part of the concept and is meant to complete the experience by taking you into a journey of visual and sonic discovery.
