Interview with Boys Go To Jupiter on Pop Single 'Virginia' Band Interviews

Interview with Boys Go To Jupiter on Alt-Pop Single ‘Virginia’ & the Music Video

MuzicNotez: First off, it’s an honor to be doing this interview with you, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us. Introduce yourselves, what are your names and rolls in the band?

Boys Go To Jupiter: We are Jess, Luke and Caleb. Jess is our lead singer, Luke plays guitar and Caleb plays keys! We all write the songs.

How did you meet and form up? How long have you been together?

Boys Go To Jupiter: Luke and Jess matched on hinge… they went on a few dates, decided it wasn’t quite romantic but WAS something else. Luckily, Caleb and Luke had also recently started living together and when the three of us were all in the same room for the first time, we started Boys Go To Jupiter! BGTJ has been an official band for almost 3 years.

How did you come up with the name Boys Go To Jupiter?

Boys Go To Jupiter: Luke keeps a lonnnnnnng list of potential band names on his phone. On his and Jess’ first date he showed her the list as some sort of flirting tactic. “Boys Go To Jupiter” was on that list and when it came time to pick a name – Jess remembered how much she liked it.

Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the band you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?

Boys Go To Jupiter: : We love Queen, Joni Mitchell, Billy Joel, Carole King, The Wizard of Oz… the combination of strong storytelling and theatricality is part of the fabric of our pop sound.

What’s the greatest concert you’ve ever been to or performed?

Boys Go To Jupiter: : Recently, Luke saw Mk.gee and he played the same song in a row 4x and Luke swears it was a spiritual experience.

What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a band? Any particular message you wish to send?

Boys Go To Jupiter: : I think ultimately, we’re on a mission to make people feel something. We want to tell really fantastic stories through intimate details and ear-catching musicality and a strong sense of voice. We’ve always been really inspired by music that takes up all the space it deserves, that grabs your attention and says something without letting go. It’s harder and harder to find these days!

Your latest release is ‘Virginia’, which we were honestly blown away by. What inspired this track? How did it come to be?

Boys Go To Jupiter: : If you can believe it, Virginia was actually the very first song we ever wrote together as a band. We were gearing up for our first show and knew we needed a special closing song that would have the audience dancing. How we landed on a disco-ghost-story, I’m not so sure… The story of Virginia is an amalgamation of the deep insecurities and fears I think we’ve all had about what people would say about us going off and pursuing a dream.

You also released a music video for Virginia which really brings it to life. What was that process like to create the video?

Boys Go To Jupiter: : What a question. It was craaaazyyy. The whole process from pre-production through post took us six months– All for a five minute video! Virginia is an epic song and we knew it required a bombastic production to tell that story right. There are a lot of lyrics and a lot to keep up with, so we tried really hard to make the music video feel like a short film – both in quality and in scope. Of course it couldn’t have been done without the small army of incredible friends and creative collaborators we wrangled together.

What else are you working on? What can we expect to see and hear from you in the future?

Boys Go To Jupiter: : Our debut record Meet Me After Practice is dropping on February 28th. It’s a sort of synthesis of the first seven singles we put out so far plus three more tracks AND a short film! We are also going on our first official tour this March (ticket info on our instagram!). Lots of extremely exciting things ahead! We can’t wait 🙂
