Sister Midnight Interview with the MuzicNotez Crew
- MuzicNotez Crew: How long have you been a band, and how did you come together?
- Sister Midnight: The band has been together for over a year and it started with Gabe (the guitarist/lead singer) and the drummer (Nathan) just jamming together, they’ve known each other since 5th grade. The bassist, Lauren is Nathan’s sister. He suggested her and she turned out to be a good fit.
- MuzicNotez Crew: How did you come up with the band name “Sister Midnight”?
- Sister Midnight: Me and Nathan were tossing name ideas back and forth, not coming up with anything we both liked, and I started browsing through music on my computer and I suggested Sister Midnight which is an Iggy Pop song from the album the Idiot and we decided that was better than any of the other names we thought of.
- MuzicNotez Crew: Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you play?
- Sister Midnight: David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Elton John, Pink Floyd, the Clash, the Ramones, and the Sex Pistols were all among my earliest inspirations.
- MuzicNotez Crew: If you could play with any other musician or band… who would it be? (past or present)
- Sister Midnight: The Jesus & Mary Chain or My Bloody Valentine.
- MuzicNotez Crew: What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career? Any particular message you wish to send?
- Sister Midnight: I would like to be heard by as many people as possible and influence as many musicians/potential musicians as possible. Not sure yet what my specific core message is but I would like to encourage others to pursue their dreams.
- MuzicNotez Crew: What’s the music scene like in your area for an emerging band like yours?
- Sister Midnight: Opportunities seem to be few and far between when beginning to play live shows. It can be a bit cliquey and insulated but the music scene in Portland is continuing to grow and expand I think.
- MuzicNotez Crew: What makes your band unique?
- Sister Midnight: The diversity of influences in our sound, a technically gifted drummer bred on metal taking our rock n’ roll to another level, warm guitars, simple sturdy bass lines, melodic vocals and cryptic/irreverent lyrics.
- MuzicNotez Crew: What can we expect from Sister Midnight in the future? Working on anything new right now?
- Sister Midnight: Expect us to play more shows sometime this year (2013) and hopefully record more as well. I (Gabe) am always working on new music.
- MuzicNotez Crew: How do you believe the internet helps the music industry or you as a musician?
- Sister Midnight: I would say the internet offers a wide variety of opportunities for musicians and it’s easier for artists to get exposure than ever before. But it can be hard to stand out amongst all the others. But that kind of competition just makes me strive to improve and be better and keep making music. So hopefully eventually something will rise to the surface.
- MuzicNotez Crew: Anything else you wish to say about yourself or your music? Anything to say to your fans?
- Sister Midnight: Thank you for this opportunity, and keep on rocking in the free world đŸ™‚
